The steps

Enquiry to qualification

Nothing here is unusual. It is written down so that no part of it is a surprise.

  1. Ask, before you commit to anything

    Call, WhatsApp or walk into a campus and describe what you want to do for a living. The answer you need is which qualification leads there — not a brochure. Nothing is charged and nothing is signed at this stage.

  2. Match the qualification to the entry level you already have

    Grade 9 opens NC(V) and some skills programmes; Grade 12, N3 or an NQF Level 4 certificate opens the N4 – N6 and occupational routes. Where a programme has a trade test at the end, that requirement is stated on its own page rather than discovered later.

  3. Apply

    One form, online or at a campus. Applications are open all year and a November Grade 11 report is enough to start — you are not held until final results are out.

  4. Settle the fees, or arrange who will

    Fees, payment terms, bursaries, employer funding and student study loans are all handled by the same office, so the answer arrives in one conversation rather than three.

  5. Register for a trimester or semester

    Registration fixes your subjects, your timetable and your campus. Report 191 engineering runs on trimesters, business studies on semesters, and occupational qualifications on their own cycle — the programme page states which.

  6. Study face to face, in a workshop

    Theory in a classroom and practical work on the same equipment the trade uses. Full-time lectures run mon – fri, 08:00 – 16:00; part-time classes run saturday, 08:30 – 13:00.

  7. Go to a workplace

    Occupational qualifications and learnerships include time on a host employer's site. The college places learners and the placement is assessed, so it counts towards the qualification rather than sitting outside it.

  8. Be assessed, and certificated

    Internal assessment, then the external examination or trade test set by the body that owns the qualification. The certificate is issued by Umalusi, the QCTO or the relevant SETA — not by the college — which is what makes it worth something to an employer.

How we work

Four things we will not shortcut

  • Face to face, on real equipment

    Trades are learned with your hands. Every programme that has a practical component teaches it in a workshop, not in a video.

  • The certificate comes from outside

    Assessment is external. That is slower and harder than issuing our own paper, and it is the only reason the qualification travels.

  • One office answers the money question

    Fees, bursaries, employer funding and study loans are handled together, so nobody is sent between three desks to find out what they will pay.

  • Placement is part of the qualification

    Where a programme requires workplace hours, the college finds the host and assesses the time. It is not homework handed to the learner.
